Richard Serra

The photograph shows the final phase of the installation of the torqued spiral Four. The last of five plates is being set. Although not site-specific, Four and Left/Right were completed for the Venice Biennale and for a space of particular dimensions. The new works build on the principles developed in a series of double-torqued ellipses, in that the interior curvilinear path opens and closes and leans inward and outward as one walks into and through the sculpture. As opposed to the torqued ellipses, in which the path encloses an interior core, the path of these new works continuously spirals inward toward a torqued interior volume. The effects of these works are anticipation, dislocation, and disorientation.
